MIHO Musem is located southeast of Kyoto. It was the dream of Mihoko Koyama (after whom it is named). Designed by Chinese American Architect I.M. Pei, the concept came from Shangri-la, the legendary paradise located in a hidden valley in the Himalayas. A tunnel leading to the monumental entrance is a key element for the whole design. Although there is free bus which can give you a ride from the gate to the museum entrance, walking through the tunnel by yourself is an absolutely pleasant experience. Probably because I was in ancient villages for few days, this tunnel was like a time traveling passage which brought me from Edo Period to 21st century.

80% of the museum was created underground as a way to preserve its natural environment. The structure you can see above the ground is like a glass house. One of the reasons why I like Japanese architecture is they are modern but they are still very Japanese.

It will take a while to get there, but it is absolutely worth the efforts.

How to get there:

1. Catch JR from Kyoto to Ishiyama Station (15 mintures)

2. Catch Teisan bus to MIHO Musum (50 minutes, 820 yan)

Check there website before you go. They will close for some period of time.
